The 80-acre Ella Wheeler Wilcox Homestead Historical Cultural Site is the former childhood home of author and poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox. Born in 1850, Ella achieved notoriety at the young age of 14 when her writing first appeared in a national newspaper. She published her first book at 22 and went on to publish many more works including the poem Solitude with the notable verse, “Laugh, and the world laughs with you; Weep, and you weep alone”.
The property has been restored with prairie and waterways and a historic marker has been installed.
