January Restoration Workdays at Donald County Park

Event Dates

  • Saturday, 01/13/2024 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, 01/27/2024 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Event Description

Our focus this winter is eradicating invasive brush with hand tools in an oak savanna restoration area. We work in teams, no experience is necessary, just a love for the natural world and a desire to help out.

Please RSVP to the work-party leader, Liz McBride, at elizabeth-mcbride@sbcglobal.net by the Friday before the workday so she can contact you if weather forces us to cancel.

What to wear: Dress for the weather. Wear old sturdy clothes that can withstand brambles. Warm garden or leather gloves are recommended. We have leather gloves to lend out if needed.

Please bring water, we'll bring tools and cookies.

Saturday 1/27/24:

Dane County Parks has given us the opportunity to broadcast seed in the savanna areas that we are restoring and also in a new prairie west of Sutter Drive. This is premium seed carefully hand-collected from parks throughout Dane County and then cleaned and mixed, all by volunteers. Thank you to those volunteers! We hope to broadcast seed in the savanna areas next Saturday, January 27, from 1 pm to 3 pm and can use a few more volunteers. If you are interested, please RSVP to Liz McBride at elizabeth-mcbride@sbcglobal.net by Friday.

Important to know:

  • The footing in the savanna areas can be difficult. The savannas are on slopes and contain stumps that may be trip hazards. While we may lose some snow by Saturday, it is likely to still be fairly deep.
  • Conditions for Saturday are uncertain. If the snow is too deep or icy to navigate, we will need to reschedule. Liz will contact volunteers on Friday by email to confirm or cancel the workday and, if it's a go, specify a meeting location.

We hope to broadcast prairie seed the following Saturday, February 3, but that is also tentative and depends on conditions.

Please RSVP to Liz at elizabeth-mcbride@sbcglobal.net if you are interested in one or both of these workdays and she will follow up with you directly with details.
