Dane County Parks Prescribed Burn Orientation/Refresher for DCP Volunteers

Event Dates

  • Saturday, 03/18/2023 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Event Description

Lars Higdon and Shane Otto, Dane County Parks Naturalists, will be hosting a Dane County Parks Prescribed Fire Orientation/Training seminar. Topics covered will include:

  • operational procedures, fire prescription, and weather;
  • basic RX fire equipment usage with drip torches, hand tools, and backpack pumps;
  • more advanced RX fire techniques such as dot lighting, flank fires, and pump usage.

If you plan on helping with Dane County Parks RX fires in 2023 we strongly encourage you to attend.

Indoor training session 9:00 am - 1:00 pm including lunch. We will then have a combination of indoor and outdoor training stations from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm. There will likely be no live fire, but dress appropriately for the outdoor stations.

Dane County is striving to expand our burn program as fire is a critical tool in managing our natural areas. Ensuring safety, efficiency, and integrity of this program will take efforts from all involved. We would appreciate your attendance.

Space is limited; Sign-Up is required: https://signup.com/go/FyQqtEw

What to Bring: Bring something with which to take notes (if you want), water, snacks/lunch will be provided. Make sure to wear clothes you don't mind working in, closed-toe shoes, and anything else you'd need to be comfortable for this indoor/outdoor training session.
