Winter Maintenance Equipment Calibration Workshop

Event Description

Join us for a free workshop to learn how to calibrate various types of winter maintenance equipment, Calibrating equipment is a critical first step in efforts to track and reduce winter salt use.  This workshop is open to anyone who has attended (or is registered for the Oct 19th training) a Winter Maintenance./Salt Certification training and applies salt in Dane County.  Please only send staff who will be calibrating equipment as we can only allow up to two participants from the same organization. 

Topics will include:

• Salt spreader and spreader control basics

• Salt spreader calibration procedures

• Hands-on field demonstration of calibration procedures

• Hands-on field demonstration of salt bounce and scatter

The workshop will be led by: 

Mark Cornwell is the Principal of Sustainable Salting Solutions, LLC, Holly, Michigan. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Landscape Horticulture from Michigan State University. Mark worked in the University of Michigan, Grounds and Waste Management Department as a Senior Horticulturist responsible for all facets of campus landscape management.  He served as chairperson for the University’s Salt Use Reduction Team where he established best management practices designed to reduce salt and sand used in winter maintenance by 50% of their ten-year annual average use. Mark has also worked in the private sector advancing the use of liquid anti-icing/deicing chemicals and marketing spreader technology from Europe that employs a high liquid to solid ratio of deicing chemicals. 

Ben Jordan, PE, is Director of the Wisconsin Transportation Information Center. He has over thirty years of experience in civil engineering and public works, previously working as a Director of Public Works, Village Engineer and highway engineer. His winter maintenance experience includes responsibility for management of winter operations for streets, commuter-parking facilities and a shopping center. He is a member of the American Public Works Association (APWA) Winter Maintenance Subcommittee and the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Standing Committee on Winter Maintenance. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana -Champaign and is a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois.
